Mirka Raito

Mirka Raito grew up in the suburbs of Helsinki
and spent a lot of time outdoors between concrete
and trees. There was an atmosphere of transit,
waiting for something and longing for
somewhere else that prevailed.

As a child, Raito fainted easily and believed
she could levitate. She also believed she had
supernatural abilities and could “sense” other
people’s thoughts. Later, she learned that this
was an ASMR sensation. These experiences
had a strong influence on Raito’s way of being
in the world and maybe that is why automation,
senses and dreams had an important role in her
artistic practice.

Raito is working in the field of painting, drawing,
collage, installation and performance art.
Biographical and playful working processes are
essential to her artistic work. Raito is interested
in therapeutic and trauma healing experiences
through art.

Raito has been living in Hamburg, Germany since
2003 and has been actively exhibiting in solo and
group shows in Finland and Germany. She is one
of the founding members of the artist collective
JOKAklubi (2009-). This collaboration with long-time
colleagues and visual artists Niina Lehtonen Braun
and Tellervo Kalleinen is an important part of Raito’s
artistic activities. Together, the trio creates
participatory and performative works.
