Ville Välikangas

Ville Välikangas

Ville Välikangas is interested in the themes of existence, and it has always been important to him to depict humanity. In addition to people, landscapes for example are a recurring motif. His works usually include figurative elements, but sometimes he creates entirely abstract works. Välikangas does not really plan his paintings or make sketches. He creates his works in a moment of painting, through mistakes and successes on the surface. His style of painting is expressive and he usually uses plenty of paint. In addition to figurative and abstract expressionism, his works are influenced by surrealism and for example naive art. Sometimes his works are also influenced by what is happening in the world, for example Russia invading Ukraine.

Ville Välikangas completed his art education at the Lahti Art Institute in 2015. He works mainly with oil colour, but he also makes paintings with water colours and gouache. His works are in collections of The Finnish National Gallery, Tampere Art Museum and Pekka Halonen collection.
