Päivikki Alaräihä lives and works in Helsinki. By means of painting and installation she examines the relationships between object, place and the viewer moving through the space. Her work combines various painting techniques in a versatile manner, such as wall and window painting and self-made paper. In her installations the paintings direct the viewer’s attention to the exhibition site and space around the work. Many of the works are based on subtle contrasts and emphasize their materiality (e.g. the roughness of the canvas surface) consequently requiring the viewer to stop and gradually sensitize their gaze. Often the border between the painting and its surroundings is blurred or the border disappears. Sitespecific paintings shatter the assumptions of a neutral exhibition space and reflect in a subtle way on the essence of the space surrounding the works.
